Harlan County Lake

Harlan County Lake

Harlan County Lake, Nebraska's second largest lake, is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. Considered the finest walleye fishery in the state, Harlan County is also known for White bass, Wipers, Catfish and Crappie, and to a lesser extent, Northern Pike and Largemouth Bass. The lake is a favorite for camping, boating and water skiing in the Great Plains region of the United States.

As a federal project, Harlan County Lake is open year round, with public access on all of the Corps property for hunting pheasants, quail, turkey, deer, ducks and geese. During the winter, when the lake is full of tens of thousands of ducks and geese, American Bald Eagles can be viewed at the Alma end of the lake or from the dam. Harlan County residents know that spring has finally arrived when white Pelicans take up residence at the lake.

There are 542 camping pads available at 7 established campgrounds around the lake's 75 miles of shoreline. Primitive camping is permitted on most of the federal property around the lake.

Although a Nebraska hunting and/or fishing license is required, no state permit for camping is needed, and the Corps honors and sells Golden Age Passports.

Day use fees are charged at Gremlin Cove, North Outlet, South Outlet, Hunter Cove and Methodist Cove. Electrical hookups and heated showers are available at both Hunter and Methodist facilities. Hunter has a coin-operated laundry. Camping pads with electrical and full hookups are available at Patterson Harbor Marina and North Shore Marina.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' and U.S. Forest Service campground spaces can be reserved in advance by calling the toll-free phone number, 1-877-444-6777. You can also visit the web site at Reserve USA link opens in a new window. Reservations across the USA can be made up to 240 days in advance. Group shelter houses at Gremlin Cove and High Point can also be reserved by calling the toll-free number. More information is available on our camping page.

Harlan County Dam is at the Republican City end of the lake.

About Harlan County

Harlan County, Nebraska, population 3,423, located in the Republican River Valley on the border of Kansas, is many things to many people:  a peaceful refuge away from the hectic pace of city life, a prime hunting and fishing region, a wide-open location in which to view and interact with nature, and a family vacation destination with a diversity of activities to suit a variety of interests.

Rich in both Native American and pioneer history, Harlan County and the Republican River Valley were once home to the largest concentration of buffalo on the Great Plains and were a favored hunting ground for the Pawnee, Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.

Although warned by the native populations about the common occurrence of major flooding in the area, Europeans settled along the river and in 1935 over 100 people drowned and most bridges and farm buildings were destroyed by an eight foot high wall of flood water moving downriver.  The Harlan County Dam and Reservoir were then built to control flooding and manage irrigation, but they have since become the crown jewel of the region, serving as the prime outdoor recreation destination and wildlife haven in south-central Nebraska.

Republican River Canoe/Tubing Trail

The Republican River as it flows through Harlan County is slow-moving, braided, and beautiful, with a wide variety of birds and other forms of wildlife typically seen along the way. A rather unique site along the river above Naponee is an area where the bank was, long ago, reinforced with the bodies of antique automobiles.

On the International Scale of River Difficulty, the Republican River in Nebraska is rated as Class I: Easy.  Thousands of tubers typically travel the section of river from the Harlan County Dam to Naponee during the summer months, especially on the summer holiday weekends.

Republican River Canoe/Tubing TrailRepublican River Canoe/Tubing Trail

Water levels in the river are significantly impacted by dry or wet weather conditions during the year, and flow below the Harlan County Dam depends on the amount of water being released from the dam.  The most current online data available regarding the cubic feet per second (cfs) of water being released from the dam is listed on the Bureau of Reclamation website link opens in a new window, however, flow rates can change very quickly, and it is always a good idea to contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Harlan Lake, 308-799-2105, prior to your canoeing or tubing trip.

A map of the river trail from Harlan County Dam to Superior --including parking, camping, and access sites--is available from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission link opens in a new window.

Estimated travel times for various segments of the river, as well as a complete guide for canoeing on Nebraska water trails, is also available by navigating from the NGPC website listed above.
